Rock Motorsports Hall of Fame
Hi Ranch,
I’m really excited to nominate Darrell Motley to the Rock Motorsports Hall of Fame for his
work behind the scenes establishing the ERoCC rock crawling series in the East, which was
acquired by UROC in 2003. It was Darrell who had the original idea to create a new rock
crawling series on land in Tennessee that the Trailkeepers organization was managing.
Darrell didn’t just have the original idea, he spent countless weekends at the event site
using heavy equipment, blood, sweat and tears to clear trees and literally move mountains
to create a competition site frequently described by competitors as “tough as nails”.
Darrell also helped recruit and motivate an army of volunteers over 100 strong to make sure
the events went off without a hitch.
After the series started to gain traction he built a relationship with the Badlands in Indiana
to expand the series across multiple sites in different states. Darrell took his course
building skills to another location and was able to envision even more difficult obstacles to
keep the competitors guessing.
Not one to rest on his laurels, he started to play around with temporary courses, creating a
unique temporary course in the RCA dome in Indianapolis for an offroad show, and a few
other permanent man-made courses. Using his many years of construction experience he
pioneered a solution for temporary courses using hay bales covered with wire mesh and
shot-crete. This was used in the parking lot of the Las Vegas convention center at the SEMA
show in 2005.
Darrell accomplished all of this 20 to 25 years ago, so I’m probably leaving out a lot of the
things he did, and I might be mis-remembering some things. But what I do know is what he
did was amazing and without his involvement rockcrawling East of the Mississippi would
never have had the fanbase and top-notched competitors it enjoyed in the early 2000’s.
